PerryLib0108-int-lgFeatured Project: Cecil County Public Library Goes Green
The recently opened Cecil County Library’s Perryville Branch features 25 public access computers, a children’s library, a technology training lab, a 75 person meeting room, a large computer lab with wireless technology, a drive through check-out window, self-check out stations, the capacity to hold 70,000 items in the complete collection, and a café. But what really makes this project special? The library was built with many environmentally friendly features also designed to keep ongoing maintenance at a minimum. Here are some of the “green” features:

 INTERIOR

EXTERIOR

  • Geothermal heating and cooling system,
  • High performance, double glazed, "Low-E" windows with thermal breaks to control solar loads are installed throughout. Low energy glass is insulated and tinted to filter heat and UV rays from the sun while maximizing the amount of useable natural light to enter the building,
  • Plumbing systems that minimize the use of water such as water conserving toilets and urinals, and sensor operated toilets, urinals, and lavatories are installed,
  • All components of the modular carpet are recycled, over 65% of the components of the acoustical ceiling panels are recycled, and the steel and concrete used throughout the project include recycled content,
  • Low VOC paint, carpet and adhesive products have been used, containing little or none of the dangerous chemicals commonly found in these materials.

  • The library is situated to preserve the natural landscape as much as possible; storm water management was incorporated in the south corner of the site to reduce earthwork and retain some forest area,
  • The building orientation is set to maximize natural daylight and solar control,
  • Landscaping includes native and drought resistant plants to reduce the need for extensive water, and strategically-located trees which shade paved surfaces and building facades,
  • Efficient building envelope: roof assembly designed to have an R-value of R-30 and exterior wall assembly designed to R-20.

“We sought a contractor who would embrace the idea of building an exceptional library that would set a standard for quality libraries…and work hard to keep costs under control. Paul Risk Associates met our high expectations. The quality of construction is clearly superior….I am impressed with the commitment of your staff…high standards were always maintained…and your team’s enthusiasm for the project was evident every day.”
